InBody Technology

Why is InBody technology more expensive than other BIA devices?

InBody technology is different than that used in other BIA devices:

  • InBody technology relies on direct measurement and can measure the body segmentally.
  • InBody technology is capable of accurately measuring impedance in the trunk.
  • InBody uses multiple frequencies.
  • InBody does not use empirical estimations in calculating values.
  • InBody can evaluate a wide range of body types, from extremely obese, to elderly, to athletic.
How do InBody devices compare to other BIA devices? What are the major technical difference between InBody and other BIA devices?

– The use of multiple frequencies to accurately measure intracellular and extracellular water.
– 8-point tactile electrode system with thumb electrodes providing a direct and reproducible measurement.
– Segmental impedance measurements to include accurate lean body mass measurements of the trunk.
– No empirical estimations required.

What are the advantages of using multiple frequencies instead of single frequency?

Using multiple frequencies improves accuracy and precision. At a single and low frequency, it is difficult for electrical currents to penetrate the cellular membrane and assess intracellular water. As frequencies get higher, the electrical current is more capable of penetrating the cellular membrane and accurately measuring intracellular water.

How are 8-point tactile electrode different than adhesive EKG tape electrodes?

Adhesive tape electrodes are usually placed on the wrist and a fingertip. Voltage line and current flow line always overlap from a certain point, and that point is where measurement begins.  However, it is almost impossible to place adhesive electrodes in the exact same place every time, thus the measurement starting points can differ. Rather than adhesive tape electrodes, InBody devices use tactile electrodes. Voltage line and current flow line overlap at the same point and allow for a secure and reproducible measurement starting point for each individual.

How does the InBody derive body fat measurements from body water measurements?

Body water volume is closely related to fat free body mass. When fat free mass is subtracted from total weight, body fat mass remains.

How do InBody devices work?

InBody devices use direct segmental measurement bioelectrical impedance analysis (DSM-BIA) to precisely measure body composition by sending multiple electrical currents through the body, resulting in up to six different impedance readings for the trunk and each of the four limbs.

The innovative in-depth analysis of the InBody Test yields accurate results for body composition outputs, such as body fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, (segmental) lean body mass, and percent body fat.

What is impedance?

Impedance is the frequency-dependent opposition of a conductor to the flow of an alternating electric current. Impedance is composed of two main properties, resistance and reactance.

InBody provides segmental impedance values at varying frequencies to allow for accurate analysis of the human body. Since reactance is the interrupting force of alternating current flow, it increases in proportion to the integrity of cell membrane. Therefore, reactance and phase angle decrease when the number of cells is low or the cell membrane is more permeable or unhealthy.

The more water there is, the lower the impedance.

Body Composition

Is BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) accurate?

Historically, BIA technology, devices, and results have been met with some degree of skepticism. However, InBody technology addresses these concerns with its technological features and provides great precision and accuracy for total body and segmental measurements.

What are some other commonly used methods for body composition analysis?

Other methods of measuring body composition include DEXA, hydrostatic weighing, air displacement, and anthropometric calipers.

When measuring body composition on BIA devices, why do results change when height changes?

The volume of a cylinder, in this case the body, changes when the height of the cylinder changes. BIA devices consider the body as a cylinder and the volume of body water is calculated with the height and impedance of the body.

How can percent body fat change within a time frame as short as a single day?

Weight and body water changes can occur with the introduction of meals and fluids, or with a change in environment. Circulation of body water may also cause changes in water distribution throughout the day. It is recommended that repeat tests be performed under the same testing conditions, in the same environment, and at the same time of day as the initial test.

What are the difference between InBody models?

All InBody models accurately measure weight and body composition. Other outputs and technical specifications differ by model. These differences are highlighted on the main product page.

Maintenance

What is InBody Maintenance Service?

InBody recommends regularly scheduled maintenance of your Body Composition Analyzer every12-24 months, depending on the frequency of use, to maintain optimal testing performance.
We recommend scheduling maintenance service if:

  • It has been over 24 months since your purchase
  • Your InBody undergoes high daily usage
  • Your InBody has been unused for over 4 months
  • Your InBody is frequently moved to different locations
  • Your InBody is experiencing weight measurement fluctuations

The InBody Maintenance Service includes:

  • Board Functionality
  • Cable Functionality
  • Electrode Functionality
  • Program Update
  • Hardware Modification (if available) Fine Tune Calibration
  • Weight Calibration
  • Thorough exterior and interior cleaning

Some of the maintenance services vary depending on the region.

What is the life expectancy of an InBody device?

InBody devices do not have a defined life expectancy. As long as you take good care of the device, you can continue to use your InBody device for many years. There are functioning InBody units greater than 10 years old.

What can I use to disinfect the InBody?
Wear disposable gloves and use 70% (or above) Isopropyl Alcohol Wipes to disinfect the InBody while paying special attention to the hand electrodes, footplate, screen, and any other part of the device that is frequently touched.
To prevent damage to the device:

  • Do not spray or pour liquids directly on your InBody device.
  • Do not immerse any part of the InBody device in liquid.
  • Do not use cleaning agents composed of quaternary ammonium components such as benzalkonium/benzylalkonium chloride, which may cause discoloration and corrosion.

What is the warranty policy?

The standard warranty policy is 1 year from the purchase date for all InBody products. Extended warranty is available at the time of purchase, and you may be eligible to purchase an extended warranty if the product was purchased within a year. The warranty does not cover any physical and/or cosmetic damage, which includes any type of water damage. Other fees will apply for additional services such as loaner units and expedited shipping.

How often does the InBody device need to be calibrated?

The InBody device has an auto-calibration function that is completed each time the device is turned on. It is not necessary to calibrate the InBody device unless there have been circuit board replacements. Load cell calibration should only be performed when weight measurements seem incorrect.

Problems with the device

The device keep freezing

If the device freezes randomly on the main screen:
Try unplugging the USB cord that connects the InBody to the printer. Sometimes, garbage values can cause the InBody program to freeze. You will need to purchase a separate filter for the InBody and printer.

If the unit is freezing during the warm up process:

The weight on my scale is off

Try turning the unit off and then back on. Do not stand, press, or leave anything on top of the base of the scale while the unit is warming up.
Go to SETUP to make sure that there is not a weight adjustment setting made to your unit.

How do i setup/change my access code/password?

  • Press SETUP on the bottom left corner
  • Enter the admin password. The default is 0000
  • Select 01. Date/Time/Units/Password/Volume
  • Press right to go to page 2
  • Select Set Passwords

  • Press SETUP on the keypad
  • Go to 02. Region
  • Use the arrow keys to scroll down to access code and choose ENABLE
  • Go to the next option to set up your access code. The default PW is 0000

InBody Test

How often can you take the InBody Test?

The frequency of measurement is fully dependent on each facility and program. InBody recommends testing every 2-4 weeks.

How long does the InBody Test take?

The InBody Test lasts between 15 seconds and 120 seconds, depending on the model being used.

InBody 270: 15 seconds
InBody 370S: 45 seconds
InBody 570: 45 seconds
InBody 770: 60 seconds
InBody S10: 90 seconds (Medical Mode), 120 seconds (Research Mode)

Why do i need to remove my shoes and socks for the test?

Because the bottom of your feet must be in direct contact with the electrodes, clothing items such as shoes, socks, stockings or leggings must be removed for accurate results.

Can i operate an InBody device without any special training?

Yes. InBody devices are quick, convenient, and easy to use.

Each InBody model has an intuitive LCD screen for data entry and prints a result sheet automatically after each test. Each InBody comes standard with a quick set-up and installation guide, a user manual, a results interpretation poster, and a results interpretation booklet.

Why should i stand upright during the test?

The InBody requires you to stand upright because an upright position resembles the natural state of the human body.

Are there any height, weight or age restriction for the InBody Test?

All of the InBody models have the same test ranges for weight, height, and age.

Weight range: 10kg – 250kg
Height range: 95cm – 220cm
Age range: 3 years to 99 years

Will i feel the electrical current during the test?

For the average population, the electrical currents sent through the body during InBody Tests are too low to feel.  However, there is a small possibility that individuals with tactile sensitivity may feel a slight sensation.

What factors can affect the accuracy of my test result?

Changes in body composition reflect body status, which may be affected by factors such as disease, nutrition, hydration, and medication. Accessories such as jewelry may interfere with the electrical conductivity. Improper posture will also affect test results.

It is recommended to maintain the same testing conditions from test to test to produce high data reproducibility and comparability.

Can InBody test people with prosthetic limbs?

Unfortunately, the InBody’s electrical currents are unable to flow through prosthetic limbs. The electrodes must come into contact with the body at all eight contact points: thumbs, palms, soles, and heels.
The InBody S10 allows those with amputated limbs to test with the adhesive electrodes. However, the data for the amputated limbs will not be accurate, so results should be analyzed by a medical professional for accurate health consultations.

Who are not recommended to take an InBody Test?

People with artificial electrical implants such as a defibrillator or pacemaker are not recommended to take an InBody Test. The electrical currents of the InBody may disrupt the functionality of life-sustaining implants.
Women who are on their menstrual cycle or are pregnant are not recommended to test as they may not obtain accurate results due to subtle changes in their hydration and body water levels.

Why use InBody Tissue before testing?

The InBody Tissue increases electrical conductivity where the hand and feet electrodes make contact with the skin. Without the tissues, it could be difficult for the electrical currents to flow through thick calluses or hard skin on the hands or bottom of the feet.

How do i clear/reset my database?

270/370S/570/770:
Press the ADMINISTRATOR MENU button on the bottom left corner
Press Option (6) to view the database
Press the top circle on the right hand side to highlight all the data
Once highlighted, press the DELETE button on the bottom right to clear your database.

230:
Press SETUP on your Keypad
Go to Option 4. Results
Use the keypad to highlight Option (4) Data Clear
Once highlighted, press ENTER on your keypad to clear the database history

370:
Press the DATABASE button on the top left corner
Press SELECT ALL and then DELETE

520 and 720:
Press SETUP on your Keypad
Go to option 6. Others
Scroll down using the arrow keys and highlight Initialize history
Press ENTER to clear the database permanently

How do i export/copy the database onto an Excel file?

Insert your InBody USB thumb drive into the USB port on the back of the InBody
Press the ADMINISTRATOR MENU button on the bottom left corner
Go to Option (7) Export Data as Excel
You can choose export all of the data or select individual tests
Once selected, press START

230:
Insert your InBody USB thumb drive into the USB port and press ENTER on your keypad
A sub menu will appear, please press ENTER for yes

370:
Insert your InBody USB thumb drive into the USB Port
Press DATABASE on the top left corner
To copy the database as an Excel spreadsheet, press SELECT ALL then COPY
To back up the database, please press BACKUP

520:
Insert your InBody USB thumb drive into an open USB port
Press DATABASE on your keypad
Once in the Database, press SETUP on your keypad
Choose (1) to back up the database file
Choose (3) to copy the database file onto an Excel spreadsheet

720:
Insert your InBody USB thumb drive into an open USB port
Press DATABASE on your Keypad to access the database
Below the database screen, you will see options to save, backup, or load the database
A sub menu will appear: (1) Backup (2) Restore (3) Copy. Please select Option (3) copy to view your database on an Excel spreadsheet.

**Note: It may take several hours when exporting large amounts of tests**

How do i load or restore the database onto the InBody?

In order to restore or load the database, you will need the database or backup file.

*NOTE*
Restoring the database file on the 520/720 will replace the current data on your unit.
For the 370/570/770, unless you have the “combine” option, it will also replace the current data on your unit. Please contact our support department if you have any inquires prior to restoring the database onto your machine.
Transfer the backup file into the InBody USB thumb drive.
The file will have a .bin or .bak extension. Once you have loaded the file onto your InBody USB thumb drive, please follow the instructions accordingly to your InBody unit.

270/370S/570/770:
1. Insert USB into any open USB port on the back if the InBody
2. Press the ADMINISTRATOR MENU on the screen
3. Go to option 08. Backup/Restore (some units may have a COMBINE option)
4. Choose RESTORE DATA and then press START
5. You can also choose DATA COMBINE to add on to your current database

520:
1. Insert USB into any open USB port on the back if the InBody
2. Press DATABASE on your keypad
3. Press SETUP and chose Option 2. Restore

370:
1. Insert USB into any open USB port on the back if the InBody
2. Press DATABASE on the touch screen
3. Press RESTORE

720:
1. Insert USB into any open USB port on the back if the InBody
2. Press DATABASE on the keypad
3. Press DATABASE again to access the backup/restore menu
4. Press 2. Restore

The printer is not printing

Make sure that the USB cable is plugged in properly using the image below

  • Check your printer settings
  • If you have a HP or Brother Printer, the setting should be PCL compatible
  • If you have a Samsung Printer, the setting should be SPL2009 or SPL2009-600

To change your Printer Settings:

  • Press Option 9 for PRINTER on page 2 and follow the guided instructions to set up the printer.

  • Go to option (2) PRINTER
  • Use the arrow keys to highlight the setting and change the settings accordingly.

370

  • Press SETUP on the top left hand corner
  • Press the PRINTER option on the menu
  • Go to Printer Type and change your settings.

520/720

  • Press SETUP on your InBody Keypad
  • Go to the PRINTER section and go to printer setup
  • Highlight the current setting and scroll up and down with the keypad to change it.
  • Press EXIT a few times on your keypad and press ENTER to save when the prompt appears.
The test results on the result sheets are not aligned correctly

Can i connect my printer through WiFi or Bluetooth?

Unfortunately, the InBody cannot connect to the printer through WiFi or Bluetooth. WiFi and Bluetooth is only available for the Lookin’body system connection.

The results sheet is printing an error message about corrupted data

This issue is due to the printer setting and not the InBody.
If you are using a Samsung printer, please go to SETUP, then printer type, and change the setting from SPL-2009 to SPL2009-600.
If the setting is already set to SPL 2009-600, please change it to SPL-2009.

How do i print multiple copies of a result sheet?
  • Use the keypad to choose the # of printouts desired

  • Go to NUMBER OF COPIES
  • Use the keypad to choose the # of printouts desired

  • Press SETUP on the Keypad

Customizing/Adjustment of InBody

How to customize Result Sheet Outputs?

STEP 1
Press Administrator Menu on the bottom left corner.

STEP 2
Press 13. Outputs/Interpretations for Results Sheet to see all the outputs that are available to print on the result sheet.

STEP 3
Select which outputs you want to remove or add to print on the select result sheet type.

How to change the default gender?

270/370S/570/770
Under the ADMINISTRATOR MENU go to 05. Bypass Age/Gender. Select your default gender.

520 and 720

  • Press SETUP and go to (6) OTHERS.
  • Scroll down on the bottom and change the DEFAULT GENDER.
Changing or disabling the sound/music on your InBody unit
